When you come wedding dress shopping, it's completely natural to want to take photographs. After all, you're trying on some pretty special dresses, and you might want to look back at them later or share them with someone who couldn't be there.
But here's something I often encourage brides to think about during their appointments at Bridal Gossip: sometimes it's worth putting your phone down and simply enjoying the moment.
Not because photographs are forbidden — they're not — but because there's so much more to choosing your wedding dress than how it looks in a picture.

A photograph doesn't tell the whole story
We've all had photographs taken where we don't quite recognise ourselves. The lighting isn't flattering, the angle feels wrong, or something that looked lovely in real life just doesn't translate to a screen. Wedding dresses can be exactly the same.
A photograph might not capture the movement of a beautiful skirt, the detail of delicate lace or the way a dress sits as you walk around. And it certainly can't capture how comfortable, confident or happy you feel wearing it.
That's why I always encourage brides to look in the mirror, move around and really take in how a dress feels before reaching for their phones.
How do you feel in the dress?
This is the question I come back to again and again. When you're standing in front of the mirror, do you feel comfortable? Can you imagine yourself walking down the aisle, celebrating with your guests and dancing in this dress? Do you feel like yourself?
Those feelings matter far more than whether a photograph looks perfect.
Sometimes a bride will try on a dress she hadn't expected to love, only to discover that it makes her feel absolutely wonderful. I'd hate for that lovely moment to be overshadowed by worrying about how the dress looks on a phone screen.

Give yourself time before looking at photographs
It's tempting to take pictures of every dress and then spend the evening comparing them all. But photographs can sometimes make the decision harder, particularly if you start zooming in on tiny details or asking lots of different people for their opinions.
A dress that felt amazing in the boutique might suddenly seem less appealing because of an unflattering photograph. Or you might find yourself favouring a dress that photographs beautifully, even though you didn't feel quite right wearing it.
My advice is to give yourself a little time to form your own opinion first. Look in the mirror. Notice how the dress fits and moves. Think about what you love about it — and anything you're not so sure about. Then, if you'd like to take a photograph, you'll already have a much clearer sense of how you feel.
Remember, it's your wedding dress
One of the lovely things about having a private bridal appointment at Bridal Gossip is that there's time to concentrate on you. I'm here to help you explore different styles, answer your questions and offer honest, supportive advice. There's no pressure to make a decision before you're ready.
And while it's wonderful to have people whose opinions you trust, remember that you're the person who'll be wearing the dress. You don't need to send photographs to everyone you know or collect a dozen opinions before deciding whether you love something.
Your own feelings deserve to come first.

So, should you take photos at your bridal appointment?
Of course, that's up to you. I don't forbid photographs at Bridal Gossip, but I do encourage brides not to make them the focus of the appointment.
Enjoy trying on the dresses. Take your time in front of the mirror. Walk around, notice the details and pay attention to how you feel.
You might find that the moments you remember most clearly aren't the ones you photographed, but the ones when you looked in the mirror and thought, this could be my dress.
And that's a feeling worth paying attention to.
