Choosing your bridesmaid dresses is a lovely opportunity to bring the overall look of your wedding together — but they don't need to match your wedding dress perfectly.
In fact, I think the best bridal parties feel coordinated rather than identical. Your wedding dress, bridesmaid dresses, flowers, venue and overall colour palette can all work together while still allowing everyone to feel comfortable and like themselves.
So, once you've chosen your wedding dress, here are a few things to think about when choosing dresses for your bridesmaids.
1. Start with your wedding dress
Your wedding dress is a useful starting point, but you don't need to find miniature versions of it for your bridesmaids. Instead, think about the overall feeling of your dress. Is it clean and contemporary? Soft and romantic? Relaxed? Structured? Full of detail? Very simple?
Your bridesmaid dresses can echo that overall feeling without copying individual details. For example, a simple, elegant wedding dress could look beautiful alongside equally understated bridesmaid dresses — or you might deliberately introduce more colour or texture.
There isn't one correct combination.
2. Think about the overall wedding, not just the dresses
Your bridesmaid dresses will be seen alongside much more than your wedding dress. Think about your flowers, venue, season, styling and colour palette too. A colour or fabric that looks quite different when viewed on its own can make complete sense once it's part of the whole wedding.
If you're planning a relaxed coastal wedding in Cornwall, for example, you may make very different choices from someone planning a formal winter celebration.
Use your wedding as the bigger picture rather than trying to make every dress match.
3. Complement rather than copy
Your bridesmaids don't need the same neckline, fabric, embellishment or silhouette as your wedding dress. Look for elements that feel good together instead. You might pick up a subtle colour from your flowers, choose fabrics that have a similar softness or structure, or simply choose bridesmaid dresses that share the same overall level of formality as your wedding dress. Sometimes contrast works beautifully too.
The aim isn't to create a set of rules. It's simply to make the different elements feel intentional when they're seen together.
4. Let your bridesmaids feel like themselves
Your bridesmaids may have different heights, body shapes, personal styles and ideas about what makes them feel comfortable. They don't necessarily all need to wear exactly the same dress. You could choose one colour and allow different styles, choose a palette of complementary shades, or mix dresses while keeping one element consistent. If everyone feels comfortable and confident in what they're wearing, that will show far more than whether every neckline matches.
5. Consider colour carefully
Colour is often one of the biggest decisions when choosing bridesmaid dresses. Rather than asking only, “Does this match my wedding dress?”, think about how the colour works across the whole wedding.
Consider your flowers, venue and other styling, but also whether your bridesmaids actually like wearing the colour. You can use one shade throughout, several tones of the same colour or a mixture of complementary colours. There are no rules saying bridesmaids have to wear one identical colour.
6. Think about fabric and movement
Fabric can make a big difference to how a bridal party looks and feels. Some fabrics are soft and floaty, while others create a cleaner or more structured look. Think about the season, venue and how formal or relaxed you want the wedding to feel. You don't have to match the fabric of your wedding dress. In fact, different textures can look beautiful together.
Also think practically. Your bridesmaids will be standing, sitting, eating, walking, posing for photographs and hopefully dancing in their dresses, so comfort and movement matter for them too.
7. Don't worry about your bridesmaids “upstaging” you
This is one piece of traditional wedding advice I'd happily leave behind. Your bridesmaids can look fantastic without taking anything away from you. You don't need to deliberately put them in plainer dresses, avoid particular necklines or restrict their choices simply so you'll stand out. You're the bride. You will.
Choose something that works beautifully with your wedding, but let the people you've chosen to stand beside you feel brilliant too.
Do bridesmaid dresses have to match the wedding dress?
No. Your bridesmaid dresses don't need to match your wedding dress in colour, fabric, neckline or style.
Think of the bridal party as part of the overall visual story of the wedding rather than a matching set. If the dresses feel right for the wedding and the people wearing them, you're heading in the right direction.
