If you've booked your first wedding dress appointment, you might be feeling a mixture of excitement and nerves.
Perhaps you've been looking forward to trying on wedding dresses for years. Or maybe the thought of walking into a bridal boutique feels a little daunting, especially if you're not sure what to expect. Will you need to know which styles you like? What should you wear? Will the dresses fit? And what happens if you don't find anything you love? These are all perfectly normal questions.
After more than 20 years working in the wedding industry, including eight years specialising in bridal, I know that trying on wedding dresses for the first time can feel like quite a big moment. But here's what I'd love you to know: you don't need to arrive knowing anything about wedding dresses. That's what I'm here to help you with.
So, if you're wondering what happens at your first wedding dress appointment, let me talk you through what you can expect when you visit me at Bridal Gossip in Wadebridge, Cornwall.any brides who worry about coming into a bridal shop.
Before your appointment: do you need to prepare?
A little preparation can be helpful, but please don't feel you need to do lots of homework before coming along. If you've been saving pictures of wedding dresses you love, you're very welcome to bring them. They can give me an idea of the shapes, fabrics or details you're drawn to. But if you haven't got a clue what you like yet, that's absolutely fine too. Sometimes it's much easier to discover your preferences once you start trying dresses on.
It's also helpful to have an idea of your wedding date and your budget. At Bridal Gossip, new-to-order wedding dresses generally cost between £1,200 and £1,700. I also have off-the-peg dresses from around £600 and sale dresses starting at £350. Remember that alterations are an additional cost, often starting at around £250, depending on what's needed. And don't worry if you're unsure about wedding dress terminology. You don't need to know your A-lines from your fit-and-flares before you arrive!
What happens when you arrive at Bridal Gossip?
Your appointment is private, so the time is dedicated to you and your wedding dress search. We'll have around 90 minutes together, giving you time to explore different styles, try on dresses and ask whatever questions come to mind. I like to begin by having a chat. I'll ask you a little about your wedding plans, whether you have any particular dress ideas and what you're hoping to find. It's not an interview, and there are no wrong answers!
You might have a very clear picture of your dream dress, or you might simply know that you're getting married and need something lovely to wear. Either is a perfectly good starting point. My aim is to make you feel comfortable and help you enjoy the experience.
How does trying on wedding dresses work?
Once we've chatted about your ideas, we'll start exploring the dresses. You might want to begin with styles you've already spotted in my collection, or I might suggest a few different shapes to help you discover what you like. Sometimes the dresses brides love in photographs are exactly the ones they fall for in person. And sometimes they're surprised by something completely different. That's part of the fun!
As you try on different gowns, we'll talk about what you like and what you're not so sure about. Perhaps you love a particular neckline but prefer the skirt of another dress. Or maybe you discover that a fabric you hadn't considered feels absolutely wonderful. You don't have to love every dress you try on.
In fact, discovering what doesn't feel right can be just as helpful as finding something you adore.
What if the sample wedding dresses don't fit?
This is something that worries lots of brides before their first appointment. Wedding dress samples aren't made to fit every bride perfectly, and bridal sizing can be quite different from the sizes you're used to wearing. So please don't be concerned if a sample dress is too big, too small or doesn't sit quite as it would once properly fitted.
At Bridal Gossip, I have sample dresses in sizes 10–32, and new-to-order dresses are available in sizes 6–32, depending on the designer. We'll work with the samples available and talk about how a dress could look and feel in the correct size. The number on the label really isn't the important thing.
What matters is finding a dress that makes you feel comfortable, confident and happy.
And please don't feel you need to change your body before you can enjoy wedding dress shopping. You deserve to have a lovely experience exactly as you are.
What should you wear to your first bridal appointment?
You don't need to buy anything special before coming along. I'd suggest wearing comfortable underwear that you feel happy in. Nude or light-coloured underwear can be useful under lighter fabrics, but it certainly isn't essential.
If you already have shoes with a heel height similar to what you're considering for your wedding, you can bring them along. But if you haven't chosen your wedding shoes yet, don't worry.
You don't need to arrive with every detail of your wedding outfit sorted. Most importantly, wear something you feel comfortable in and can easily change out of.
Who should you bring wedding dress shopping?
This is entirely up to you. Some brides love sharing the experience with their mum, sister or closest friends. Others prefer a quieter appointment or even to come on their own. There's no right or wrong way to do it. My advice is to think carefully about who will make you feel relaxed and supported.
Wedding dresses can bring out some very strong opinions, and while those opinions are usually well-intentioned, they aren't always helpful. You want people around you who will listen to what you love, rather than encourage you towards their own favourite style.
And remember, it's perfectly fine to have a different opinion from the people who've come with you.
It's your wedding dress, after all.
Can you take photographs when trying on wedding dresses?
This is a question I'm often asked. I understand why brides want photographs, particularly when they're trying to remember different dresses afterwards. But I do encourage brides not to become too focused on taking pictures during their appointment.
Wedding dresses can look quite different in photographs compared with how they appear in person. Lighting, camera angles and the way a sample dress fits can all affect the result. And a photograph can't capture how you actually feel wearing a dress.
So while I don't forbid photographs at Bridal Gossip, I'd much rather you spent your appointment looking in the mirror, moving around and enjoying the experience. If you love a dress, trust what you see and how you feel in it, rather than relying entirely on a picture.
What questions should you ask at your first wedding dress appointment?
Please ask anything you're wondering about. You don't need to save questions until the end, and there's no such thing as a silly question. We can talk about fabrics, dress shapes, sizing, alterations, ordering times and anything else you'd like to understand.
One important thing to know is that new-to-order wedding dresses typically take around six to eight months to arrive, depending on the designer. You'll also need to allow time for alterations. That's why I usually recommend beginning your wedding dress search around 12 months before your wedding.
But if your wedding is sooner, don't panic. Off-the-peg and sale dresses may offer lovely alternatives when there isn't enough time to order a new gown. I'll always be happy to explain what's possible.
What if you don't find your wedding dress at your first appointment?
Then you don't find it at your first appointment! It really is that simple. Some brides fall in love with a dress during their first visit. Others need more time to explore their preferences or think about what they've tried on. Neither experience is better than the other. You won't be expected to make a decision simply because you've booked an appointment. And you certainly shouldn't feel disappointed if you leave without choosing a dress.
Hopefully, you'll still have learned something useful about what you like, what feels comfortable and which styles you'd like to explore further. That's valuable progress too.
What if you do find a dress you love?
Well, that's lovely! And it doesn't have to involve tears, goosebumps or a dramatic announcement. You might simply feel happy, confident and completely yourself. If you think you've found your dress, we can talk through the practical details, including sizing, ordering and what happens next. And if you want a little time to think, that's fine too.
I want you to feel comfortable with your decision, not rushed into making one.

I know how much anticipation can surround a first bridal appointment. But you really don't need to be nervous about coming to Bridal Gossip. You don't need to have a particular body shape, know exactly what you want or understand how wedding dresses work.
